Before you head off to the lake for the first time this spring, make sure to check your boat for these things! Check to make sure you have the equipment needed to be safe while hitting the water all day. Some of these things include:

  • life jackets for every person on board
  • a fire extinguisher
  • an orange flag
  • whistle
  • throwable life preserver
  • make sure plug(s) are in the boat
  • try to turn over the engine, checking to see if the batteries are charged.
  • make sure your horn works
  • make sure a paddle or oar is in the boat
  • make sure nav lights are in working order

These are just a few helpful hints to make sure the first time hitting the water goes smoothly this spring!

One of the first big steps in the boat buying process is to figure out what type of boat is going to be the best choice for your needs/wants. Some boats are very universal, and some boats are strictly designed for one thing. Now, the key is to decipher what you and your clan are going to spend the majority of your time doing. But luckily, there are now more boats that have a more universal fit for people. Check out the options that may be best suited for your needs.

All-purpose fishing boats: This is the perfect all-around fishing boat for versatility. This boat will fit all of your fishing needs..

Aluminum fishing boats: These are lightweight, rugged and easy to transport. These boats are very popular among anglers.

Bass Boats: These boats are highly specialized for fishing bass.

Bay Boats / Flat Boats: These boats are perfect for light travelling and to navigate hard-to-reach places that you may need a shallower boat. These boats can also maneuver in shallow water.

Bow riders: These are also considered runabout boats. These boats are perfect for day-to-day activities. They ensure your clan can come along, but also have the ability to pull a skier if needed.

Deck boats: These are ideal when you're looking for something a little bigger than a bow-rider boat with more deck space!

Fish and Ski: These boats are the perfect combination of fishing and skiing! These boats are going to be based on a classic runabout or a deck boat, but also have features to support fishing needs, along with capabilities to pull a skier.

Jet Boats: Jet boats are fun and sturdy boats! These are more than just bigger personal watercraft. They are full-sized runabouts with jet motors.

Pontoon boats: Modern pontoon boats are not what they used to be, they are a lot more than just a party barge. Pontoons now have many different characteristics that can lead to countless hours of fun on the water. Anywhere from fishing style pontoon to wake surfing pontoons, they have the ability to do it all while holding your whole crew!

Ski/Wake boats: If water skiing, wakeboarding, or wake surfing is your thing, these are the boats for you! In waterskiing, you want the smallest wake possible, but in wakeboarding and wake surfing, you want the biggest wake possible.
